Environmental Conservation

Designation as an ASEAN Heritage Park

In November 2024, the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary was declared the 60th ASEAN Heritage Park. Recognized as the only major nesting habitat of Green Sea Turtles in the Philippines and the ASEAN region, this designation underscored the area’s ecological significance.

Sea Turtle Conservation Efforts

In April 2025, a collaborative effort between then Philippine Navy, the municipal government, and the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE-BARMM) led to the release of 500 green sea turtle hatchlings on Baguan Island. This activity was part of a broader coastal clean-up drive aimed at preserving marine biodiversity.

Connectivity and Utilities

Installation of Solar-Powered Cell Sites

Globe Telecom is constructing its first off-grid solar-powered cell site on Taganak Island. Scheduled for completion around mid 2025, this initiative aims to provide reliable mobile and data connectivity to approximately 10,000 residents, supporting essential services and economic growth.

Electrification Initiatives

The National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) has invested 46 Million to install three diesel-fired power generating units, each with a 50-Kilowatt capacity, on the the islands. This development is expected to bring electricity to over 2,000 households, significantly improving the quality of life for residents.

Social Services and Civil Registration

Birth Registration Campaign

A joint initiative by the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD-BARMM), the united Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Government of Japan is underway to provide free birth certificate to 1,200 individuals in Turtle Islands and Mapun. This program addresses the challenges faced by remote communities in accessing civil registration services

Public Safety and Health

Enhancement of Maritime Law Enforcement

In April 2025, Provincial Director PCOL Rodolfo A. Inoy Jr. visited the Turtle Islands Municipal Police Station to assess operational readiness and reinforce the importance of professionalism and integrity among personnel. The visit included a health and wellness outreach, providing free medical check-ups and distributing medical kits to the police force.
